Kyle Atwell
Co-Founder, Chair of the Board of Directors
Kyle Atwell is an Army Special Forces Officer and the Co-Founder and current Chair of the Board for the Irregular Warfare Initiative.
His operational experience includes assignments conducting irregular warfare and working with partner forces in North and West Africa, Afghanistan, South Korea, and Eastern Europe. He has also served as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Chief of Staff of the Army and held positions at NATO Headquarters in Brussels and the United States Mission to the United Nations.
Kyle received his Ph.D. in Public Affairs with a focus on Security Studies from Princeton University and Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Economics and International Relations from the University of California at Davis. His doctoral research, which is currently a book project, focuses on the dynamics between partner forces during military advising missions and the effectiveness of security force assistance.
From 2021-2023 he served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Kyle is currently a Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Forward Defense practice of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and a Council on Foreign Relations Term Member.
