Matthew Flug

Matthew Flug is Of Counsel at DLA Piper, in the corporate practice, where he advises clients on complex mergers and acquisitions, with a focus on the insurance and indemnification aspects of private equity and strategic transactions. His practice spans corporate law, risk management, and insurance, with deep expertise in transactional liability. He also counsels clients on D&O liability, cyber insurance, and emerging insurance solutions tailored to evolving deal environments.
Before joining DLA Piper, Matthew was a senior executive and principal of a managing general agent focused on underwriting and structuring insurance solutions for complex M&A. He previously co-founded the Transactional Risk practice of a global insurance underwriter, and held similar underwriting roles in the M&A insurance space, where he led teams and helped to develop novel insurance applications.
Matthew began his career in public service, serving in the U.S. Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community for seven years, with a focus on foreign intelligence and counterterrorism. During his time in the national security community, he spent notable time abroad at various US Embassies and engaging liaison partners.
He is a senior advisor to Presage Global, serves on the boards of non-profit Help Ukraine – Operation Palyanytsya, and is volunteer General Counsel of the Irregular Warfare Initiative think tank. Matthew holds a J.D. from Syracuse University, an M.S. in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S. in Business Administration and International Relations from American University.
